- Dr. Ali Gomaa, His Eminence Grand Mufti of Egypt, who was visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, for approximately thirty minutes from 12:35 p.m. on March 11 (Thu).
- At the beginning of Courtesy Call, Minister Okada expressed his condolences on passing of Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Sayyid Tantawi, His Eminence Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar in Egypt and also offered his congratulations on the successful surgery President Mubarak had recently undergone.
- They had exchange their views about the importance of peaceful coexistence and dialogue among different cultures, especially dialogue between the East and the West. In this regard, Dr. Gomaa explained the roles of religious authorities of Egypt in contributing to the improvement of the situation in Afghanistan.
- They also exchanged their views on mutual interaction between Japan and Egypt, particularly exchange between the universities and cooperation in Japanese language education.
