- The Government of Japan has decided to extend environmental program grant aid (the Project for Energy Conservation through Upgrading Water Supply Network in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan) totaling 1.132 billion JPY to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Notes to this effect were exchanged on February 28 (Sun) in Amman, the capital city of Jordan, between Mr. Tetsuo Shioguchi, Japanese Ambassador to Jordan, and H.E. Dr. Jafar Hassan, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation of Jordan.
- This grant aid provides the necessary equipment to improve energy efficiency of the water distribution system in Zarqa, a suburb of Jordan’s capital city, as well as technical assistance for its maintenance and operation.
- In recent years, major cities in Jordan have been facing severe water shortages, and the effective usage of water is a major challenge. Complicated water distribution system is extended on the rugged terrain in the project area. A great deal of water and energy is wasted due to excess pressure for water pumping.
- This grant aid is expected to conserve electricity consumption used for water distribution and to reduce over 5,000 tons of yearly carbon dioxide emissions compared to the assumption on continued use of the current system. It is also expected to make effective use of 1.9 million square meters of water per year that was being wasted.
(Reference) The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan covers a land area of 89,200 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 5.72 million people (World Bank, 2007). Jordan’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita is 3,310 USD (World Bank, 2008).
