Statement by the Press Secretary/ Director-general for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Situation in the Republic of Niger
February 22, 2010
Japanese
- On February 18 (Thu) in Niamey, the capital city of the Republic of Niger, the army assaulted the presidential palace and restrained Mr. Mamadou Tandja, the President of Niger, as well as a number of cabinet ministers. On the same day, the army announced, inter alia, the resignation of President Tandja and the establishment of a “Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy.”
- Japan strongly condemns this unconstitutional usurpation of power by the army. Japan hopes that all parties concerned make efforts towards resolving this matter through dialogues with a view to promptly restoring democracy and constitutional order.
