Statement by the Press Secretary/ Director-general for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Situation in Myanmar (Release of a Political Prisoner)

The Government of Japan evaluates the release of U Tin Oo, former Defence Minister and former Chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD) , by the Government of Myanmar on February 13 (Sat) as a positive step by the Government of Myanmar toward its democratization and national reconciliation.
The Government of Japan expects that the Government of Myanmar will further promote its movement of releasing political prisoners in the future and will promote the democratization process in a way that involves all parties concerned.
