A Meeting between Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO)

On November 17 (Wed.) for about 1 hour and 30 minutes from 8:00 p.m., Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, hosted a dinner at Iikura House with Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO), who is visiting Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Minister Maehara said that he appreciated the role played by WHO in the area of global health, and that Japan would step up its efforts to help developing countries achieve health-related Millennium Development Goals (MSGs) by strengthening cooperation with WHO.

  2. In response, Director-General Chan thanked Japan for its contributions to the WHO. Director-General Chan also said that the WHO highly appreciated and welcomed Japan’s new Global Health Policy announced by Prime Minister Kan last September and expressed her willingness to cooperate with Japan toward achieving goals of maternal and child health, three major infectious diseases and other issues.
