Prime Minister of Japan Naoto Kan held a bilateral summit meeting at the Prime Minister's Office with President of the Republic of Botswana Seretse Khama Ian Khama, who is in Japan on a working visit, for about 40 minutes from 7:15 p.m. on October 18 (Mon). The outline of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Prime Minister Kan expressed his admiration for the stable governance and economic growth of Botswana. He stated that Japan would like to continue to support Botswana, noting the commitments made by the Government of Japan at the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), and that as part of these commitments, he would like to proactively consider the provision of ODA loans for the Kazungula Bridge Project, a regional infrastructure project in Botswana.

    In addition, Prime Minister Kan expressed his expectations for the furthering of cooperation on the development of natural resources in Botswana through Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) , which will lead to the realization of the joint-development of natural resources by the two countries.

  2. In response, President Khama expressed his profound gratitude for Japanese assistance toward Botswana and stated that he welcomed Japanese proposal for ODA loans and the joint-development of natural resources. He also stated his expectations for the expansion of direct investment centering on the manufacturing industry in Botswana by Japanese private companies.

  3. The two leaders also exchanged views on the reform of the United Nations Security Council, and President Khama announced his renewed support for Japan’s bid for a permanent seat in the Security Council.
