- On Wednesday, October 13 (local time; Thursday, October 14 JST), all 33 miners who had been trapped underground in the San José mining accident in the Republic of Chile were rescued.
- Upon the completion of the rescue, Prime Minister Naoto Kan conveyed his congratulatory message to the President Sebastián Piñera of the Republic of Chile that he shared the joy with President Piñera as the 33 trapped miners were rescued, and so did Minister Seiji Maehara for Foreign Affairs of Japan to Minister Alfredo Moreno of Foreign Affairs and Minister Laurence Golborne of Mines of Chile.
