Outline of the Ministerial Conference on Haiti

  1. Mr. Koichi Takemasa, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, attended the Ministerial Conference on Haiti that was held in Montreal (Canada) on January 25 (Mon) (local time).

  2. The Ministerial Conference was attended by Mr. Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada (the host country), Mr. Jean-Max Bellerive, Prime Minister of Haiti, Ms. Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State of the United States of America, Mr. Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of France, and representatives from European Union, Latin American countries and international organizations. The attendees affirmed to continue emergency humanitarian aid and recognized the need for the coordination of international aid. In addition, they decided to swiftly conduct assessment of needs regarding reconstruction from the disaster, and to hold an international conference in New York in March.

  3. At the Ministerial Conference, Japan announced that it is prepared to dispatch a Japan Self-Defense force unit to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and to provide aid totaling approximately 70 million USD.

  4. Japan, an earthquake-prone country, will make proactive efforts towards Haiti’s rehabilitation and reconstruction making use of its experience and knowledge while cooperating with the international community.
