Statement by the Press Secretary/ Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the use of Military Force by the Armed and Security Forces Against the Anti-Military “Government” Movement in Guinea
September 30, 2009
- On September 28 in Conakry, the Armed and Security Forces opened fire
on participants of gatherings and demonstrations opposed to the interim
military “government,” killing many people. Japan is deeply concerned
by the large number of victims, and offers condolences to the victims and
their families.
- Japan strongly condemns such use of military force against citizens,
and urges that all of the concerned parties should exercise self-restraint
and seek a peaceful solution through dialogues.
- Japan demands that the National Council for Democracy and Development
(CNDD) should adhere to its earlier commitments that Captain Moussa Dadis
Camara and others would not run in the upcoming presidential election. Japan
also strongly hopes for the early restoration of the constitutional order
in Guinea through carrying out democratic elections in a fair and transparent
manner.
- Japan, as a member of the International Contact Group on Guinea, will continue to observe carefully the situation in Guinea.
