Statement by Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Presidential Election in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau

  1. Japan welcomes the formal election of H.E. Mr. Malam Bacai Sanha as the next President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau following fair and democratic Presidential elections that were held in a peaceful manner.
     
  2. Japan believes that political stability is essential for economic and social development. From this standpoint, Japan strongly hopes that, under the leadership of the new President-elect Sanha, the people of Guinea-Bissau will be united and the country will resolve the political instability it has faced for many years and will advance democracy.
