Statement by Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Election of the Next IAEA Director General

- Mr. Yukiya AMANO, Ambassador of Japan to the International Organizations
in Vienna, has gained support from more than the two-thirds of members of
the IAEA Board of Governors in the election of the next Director General
of the IAEA held at the Board of Governors Meeting in Vienna on July 2 (Thu)
(local time).
- While Mr. Amano needs to be formally the appointed by the Board on July 3 (Fri) (local time) and approved by the General Conference of the IAEA in September, it is very gratifying that Mr. Amano has received a wide support from the international community in the voting.
- The appointment process of the Board of Governors of the IAEA is going to be held in the morning of July 3 (Fri) (evening Japan time). Upon the appointment by the Board of Governors and the approval by the General Conference of the IAEA which is to be held from September 14, the new Director General is taking over office on December 1.
