Japan-Nigeria Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Issuance of Japan-Nigeria Joint Communiqué

From 7 p.m. to 7:50 pm on June 2, Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held talks with H.E. Chief Ojo Maduekwe, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The two Ministers agreed to further strengthen the special partnership between Japan and Nigeria by such measures as engaging more frequently in bilateral talks at the head-of-state/government and ministerial level. They agreed to issue the attached “Japan-Nigeria Joint Communiqué” based on the result of the discussion.

  2. Minister Nakasone expressed his heartfelt welcome and stated that he welcomed Minister Maduekwe from Nigeria with deep emotion since it was the first African country that he visited more than thirty years ago.

  1. Trade and Investment
  2. Minister Nakasone reaffirmed that Japan will provide every possible support to promote its trade with and its investment in Nigeria. In response, Minister Maduekwe stated that Nigeria will make further efforts to improve its investment climate.

  1. Economic Cooperation
  2. Minister Nakasone expressed his intention to enhance Japan’s ODA to Nigeria, based on the commitment made at TICAD IV. He also announced that Japan decided to resume Japanese ODA loan to Nigeria and the examination of individual projects to be financed by Japanese ODA loan. Minister Maduekwe expressed his appreciation for Japan’s cooperation.
