- Japan welcomes the election on April 19 of Mr. Iyad Al-Samarrai as speaker
of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
- With the election of the new speaker, Japan expects that the activities
of the Iraqi COR will be further revitalized, and that the COR will take
action to address the various major challenges it faces.
- Japan has supported the development of the political process of Iraq through initiatives such as assistance to the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq and Seminars on National Reconciliation, and intends to continue providing such assistance.
[Note] Speaker Iyad Al-Samarrai visited Japan in March to attend the third Seminar on Knowledge and Experience Sharing between Japan and Iraq.
