For about 30 minutes from 3:30 p.m. on April 14, 2009 (JST) Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call by board members of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation (Chairman Walter F. Mondale, former Vice President and former Ambassador to Japan; Vice Chairman Charles D. Lake II, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan; and 11 others).
Foreign Minister Nakasone stated that the Mike Mansfield Fellowship Program established 15 years ago, and whose participants are active in various fields within the U.S. Government, is extremely beneficial to the strengthening of the Japan-US relationship. Former Ambassador Mondale stated that it is gratifying that a Japan- U.S. Summit Meeting and Foreign Ministers’ Meeting had been held soon after the inauguration of the new administration and that the Japan-US relationship was the cornerstone of the U.S. diplomatic policies.
Foreign Minister Nakasone and former Ambassador Mondale also exchanged views on the issues such as recent situation surrounding North Korea.
