For about 30 minutes from 3:50 p.m. on April 9, 2009 (JST), H.E. Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held talks with the Hon. Stockwell Day, Canadian Minister of International Trade and for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, who was visiting Japan.
- At the talks both sides reached a consensus that Japan and Canada would
cooperate closely towards economic recovery and growth in the world and
the Asia-Pacific region. Minister Day also said he was looking forward to
the official visit to Canada by Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress
of Japan later this year.
- In particular, Minister Nakasone stressed the importance of building
stable economic relations in the Asia-Pacific region and, in view of the
importance Japan placed on Canada in the area of energy and food supplies,
welcomed the Asia-Pacific Gateway Strategy which Canada has been promoting
to facilitate its links with Asia. Minister Nakasone, noting the outcome
of the London Summit held on April 2, also stressed the importance of resisting
protectionism. In response, Minister Day outlined the achievements of the
Asia-Pacific Gateway Strategy and expressed his gratitude for Japanese business
investment in Canada. Minister Day also expressed his high regard for Japan’s
contribution to the London Summit, as well as his intention to deepen cooperation
with Japan, including in resisting protectionism, towards the economic recovery
of the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
- Minister Nakasone said he believed that the stability of Pakistan was important as it was directly linked to the peace and stability of Afghanistan and the surrounding region, and, outlining his plan to hold the Friends of Democratic Pakistan Ministerial Meeting on April 17 in Tokyo based on that belief, requested Canada’s cooperation. In response, Minister Day thanked Japan for its initiative and expressed Canada’s willingness to cooperate with Japan at the conference.
