Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Situation after the Parliamentary Elections in the Republic of Moldova

April 9, 2009

1.   The Government of Japan is concerned about the situation in the Republic of Moldova, where demonstrations of protesters over the result of the parliamentary elections on April 5 (Sun) led to violent clashes.

2.   The Government of Japan hopes that the situation in Moldova will be stabilized immediately and urges the parties concerned to exercise self-restraint and remain calm.

3.   The Government of Japan has supported the democratization of Moldova through such ways as dispatching observers to the International Election Observation Mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe / the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) on the occasion of the recent parliamentary elections. From this point of view, the Government of Japan will continue dialogue and cooperation with Moldova.
