- On March 26 (Thu), the Agreement between the Government of Japan and
the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt concerning the Establishment
of Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) was signed
in Cairo by the Japanese representative, H.E. Mr. Kaoru Ishikawa, Ambassador
of Japan to Egypt, and by the Egyptian representatives, H.E. Mrs. Fayza
Aboulnaga, Minister of International Cooperation, and H.E. Dr. Hany Hellal,
Minister of Higher Education and State for Scientific Research.
- (1) In the E-JUST project, the Government of Egypt will establish a
university of science and technology offering Japanese-style engineering
education and research activities, which is expected to become a core base
of research and education in the Middle East and the Arab world. In June
of 2008, the Government of Japan decided to provide technical cooperation
for the establishment of the university.
(2) The Government of Egypt intends to enact a presidential decree for an autonomous operation of the university. On the ground that an intergovernmental agreement was necessary to enact such a Presidential decree, the Government of Egypt requested in August of 2008 that an agreement on the framework of the cooperation between the two Governments be concluded. The negotiations on the agreement started in September of 2008, which has come to reach its signing today.
