Statement by the Press Secretary/ Director-general for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Killing of President Vieira of Guinea-Bissau

  1. On the news that President Vieira of Guinea-Bissau was killed by the country’s armed forces on March 2, Japan expresses its sincerest condolences to his bereaved family and the people of the country.  Such an act can never be tolerated and the Government of Japan strongly condemns it.
     
  2. Some details of this incident remain unclear.  Japan hopes that the truth behind it will quickly be revealed.
     
  3. Japan strongly expects early settlement of the situation through the democratic procedures which the Constitution of the country stipulates.
