- On Tuesday, November 17, Mr. Tetsuro Fukuyama, State Secretary for Foreign
Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with Professor Abdalla Ahmed Abdalla, Deputy
Chairman of the National Elections Commission of Sudan, at the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs for about 30 minutes from 10 a.m. Professor Abdalla is
visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry.
- During the meeting, they exchanged views on the current status of preparation and remaining challenges with regard to the general elections of Sudan scheduled in April 2010. In this connection, Mr. Abdalla expressed his appreciation for the assistance amounting to approximately ten million U.S. dollars that Japan had decided to provide in October, and requested that an observer mission from Japan be dispatched to ensure free and fair elections. Mr. Fukuyama expressed his best wishes for the success of the upcoming elections which are crucial for the democratic process in Sudan and stated that Japan would continue to actively cooperate for that.
