The 1st Meeting of Japan-Kosovo Economic Cooperation Policy Consultation

  1. The 1st Meeting of Japan-Kosovo Economic Cooperation Policy Consultation was held on October 14 (Wed) in Pristina, the capital city of the Republic of Kosovo.

At the Meeting, Japanese delegation was headed by Mr. Hideki Ishizuka, Director of Third Country Assistance Planning Division, International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan; and Kosovo’s delegation was headed by Mr. Burim Breznica, Political Adviser to the Foreign Minister of Kosovo. Each delegation consisted of governmental officials related to the future economic cooperation between the two countries.
     
  3. So far, Japan has extended assistance to Kosovo mainly through international organizations. Along with the establishment of a diplomatic relationship in February 2009, Japan has decided to commence direct bilateral assistance to Kosovo and, to this end, to hold the Economic Cooperation Policy Consultation with the Government of Kosovo. This Consultation aims to strengthen bilateral relations through exchanges of views regarding Japan’s economic cooperation policy towards Kosovo, Kosovo’s economic growth strategies and priority areas of assistance in Kosovo.

After the Republic of Kosovo declared itself independent on February 17, 2008, Japan recognized Kosovo as an independent state on March 18, 2008 and established a diplomatic relationship with Kosovo on February 25, 2009. Since then, Japan’s ambassador to Austria also serves as the ambassador to Kosovo.
