Meeting between Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, (Outline)

On January 22 (Thu), for about 90 minutes from 19:15, Mr. Hirofumi Nakasone, Minister for Foreign Affairs, had talks with Mr. Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, who was paying an official working visit to Japan. The outline of the meeting was as follows:
- At the beginning, Mr. Nakasone welcomed Mr. Godmanis’ first
visit to Japan. He also hoped that this visit would be a memorable
one to Mr. Godmanis as Mr. Nakasone understood that though being tight,
his itinerary was full of satisfying events including talks with the Prime
Minister, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Minister
of Finance, as well as a visit to Kyoto.
Mr. Godmanis told Mr. Nakasone that because he had wanted to visited Japan he was very grateful to realize this visit. He also said that his talks with Prime Minister Aso and Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Nikai were significant in that he could learn about Japan’s experience of a financial crisis in the 1990s.
- On the promotion of tourism in Latvia, Mr. Godmanis introduced
a plan to place chartered flights from Japan into service this summer. In
response, Mr. Nakasone said he would be happy if the chartered flights would
make personal exchanges between the two nations more active, in addition
to active interchanges between the two governments or parliaments.
- Mr. Godmanis expressed gratitude for a successfully-launched
project in which Japan and Latvia cooperated to work in Afghanistan. Mr.
Nakasone mentioned the signing ceremony held on January 20 of a potable
water supply project which was organized by a development advisor dispatched
by Latvia, explaining that Japan provided the project with about 25 million
yen for sinking 41 wells to supply potable water and wishing to continue
such cooperation in the future.
- Mr. Nakasone and Mr. Godmanis also exchanged views on international issues including global financial crisis and world economy, and also regional situations.
