Arrival of USS George Washington to Yokosuka

- On September 12, the U.S. Navy announced that the nuclear-powered aircraft
carrier USS George Washington would arrive in Yokosuka on September 25,
2008.
- With regard to the safety of U.S. nuclear-powered vessels, the U.S.
Government has expressed its intention to the Government of Japan on various
occasions that it continues to strictly honor all of its previous commitments
regarding the safety of U.S. nuclear vessels, which are supported by concrete
measures and stringent specifications. The Government of Japan will
also continue to expend all possible means to assure their safety.
- The Government of Japan welcomes the arrival of the USS George Washington, as the continuous strong presence of the U.S. Navy will contribute to the security of Japan and the maintenance of peace and security of the region.
