
Statement by Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Death of Mr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, President of the Republic of Zambia

- On hearing of the death of Mr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, President of
the Republic of Zambia, I express condolences to the bereaved family, and
to the Government of the Republic of Zambia and its people, on behalf of
the Government of Japan and the Japanese people.
- President Mwanawasa promoted Zambian democracy and made great efforts
to reduce poverty through economic growth. He participated in the Fourth
Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) held in
May this year in Yokohama and TICAD III (2003) as well. He did his utmost
for the development of the African region and made a great contribution
to the progress of relations between Japan and Zambia.
- I offer my sincerest prayer for the repose of President Mwanawasa's soul and hope that the Government and people of Zambia will overcome their sadness and continue to progress toward the further prosperity of their country.
