
Statement by Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Agreement of a Roadmap to Peace between Russia and Georgia

- Japan welcomes the agreement of Russia and Georgia to the ceasefire
proposal over South Ossetia, and it regards this as the result of the efforts
made by the international community, especially led by France (EU Chair
Country).
- Japan expects this agreement to be implemented on the ground without
fail. Japan also considers it important that the territorial integrity
of Georgia will be respected, and will continue to pay close attention to
the situation there.
- Japan also continues to cooperate with the efforts made by the international community to create an atmosphere in which both sides can hold dialogue without escalating ethnic confrontation once again, for achieving a peaceful solution.
