Statement by Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the Situation in Georgia

- Japan expresses grave anxiety and concern at the news that Russia is
now expanding its military operations in Georgia beyond South Ossetia.
- Japan continues to urge strongly all the parties concerned to halt the
military operations immediately.
- Japan strongly hopes that the territorial integrity of Georgia will
be respected for the recovery of peace and stability in the region, that
the situation will return to the status quo, and that further deterioration
of the situation will be avoided by dialogue between the parties concerned.
- The international society including Japan expects that Russia will act in a responsible manner as a member of the G8 countries to secure stability in the region.
