Statement by the Press Secretary/ Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the deterioration of the situation in South Ossetia
August 8, 2008
- From the afternoon of August 7 to the dawn of August 8, armed clashes
took place in South Ossetia Autonomous Province. Details are unknown
but as there are reports that these armed clashes have left many casualties,
Japan has been watching the situation with deep concern.
- Japan strongly expects that all the parties concerned will exercise self-restraint and sit down at a table for peace talks so that the situation will not further deteriorate. Japan has constantly supported the idea that the South Ossetia issue should be resolved peacefully on the basis of the principle of Georgia's territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
