Statement by the Press Secretary/ Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Ratification of a New Constitution in Maldives

- Japan welcomes the ratification of a new constitution by President Maumoon
Abdul Gayoom on August 7th in Maldives. Japan believes that this is a major
step forward in materializing the democratic reform under President Gayoom.
- Japan wishes the presidential election, which is planned to be held
before October 10th, will be proceeded in a peaceful, free and fair manner.
- Japan will continue to assist the efforts by the government of Maldives towards democracy.
