Announcement of “Stop TB Japan Action Plan”
July 24, 2008
- On July 24 (Thu), at the International Tuberculosis (TB) Symposium “Toward
Elimination of TB in the World - From Asia to Africa -” being held
in Tokyo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health, Labour
and Welfare announced the “Stop TB Japan Action Plan”. This Action Plan
which outlines Japan’s action plan for international cooperation to fight
TB, was drawn up jointly with JICA, the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association
(JATA) and Stop TB Partnership Japan. (Attached is the summary of the Action
Plan)
- Under this Action Plan, the government, the civil society, as well as
the private sector express their willingness to work with each other in
order to promote international cooperation to fight TB. It also includes
actions such as providing technical support and training human resources
by using Japan’s post-war experience to fight TB. Furthermore, the Action
Plan pledges to strengthen coordination between the public sector and the
civil society toward the promotion of international cooperation through
the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
- TB and other infectious diseases hamper progress in developing countries and seriously threaten human security. Achieving the related targets mentioned in the Millenium Development Goals, aimed at halting by 2015 and reversing the spread of major infectious diseases is also halfway. The government of Japan is of the view that this Action Plan will lay the basis for Japan’s further contribution to international fight TB, in cooperation with partner countries, international organizations, the private sector and civil society.
