Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Agreement on the Roadmap to Implement the Abyei Protocol of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan
June 12, 2008
- Japan welcomes the agreement between the National Congress Party (NCP)
and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) on the roadmap to implement
the Abyei Protocol, the most difficult and important pending issue in the
Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan, and President Omar al-Bashir’s
signing on June 8 of a President’s ordinance to approve the agreement.
- Japan highly appreciates the fact that parties concerned have exercised
their own initiative to solve the Abyei issue and have reached this agreement
as a result of persevering efforts. Japan continues to strongly hope
that both parties will bring peace and stability in the Abyei region by
steadily adhering to the roadmap.
- Japan intends to extend proactive assistance for Sudan’s peace and stability by promoting CPA implementation including the Abyei Protocol.
