Japan-UNDP Joint Framework for Building Partnership to Address Climate Change in Africa
May 30, 2008
- On the occasion of the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African
Development (TICAD IV) held in Yokohama, Japan and the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP), co-organizers of the TICAD IV, have decided to establish
Japan-UNDP Joint Framework for Building Partnership to Address Climate Change
in Africa.
- Through this framework, Japan and the UNDP will be jointly programming
more than 120 million dollars to support the efforts for addressing climate
change by the African countries which make efforts to reduce greenhouse
gas emissions and achieve economic growth in a compatible way, and work
toward climate stability. Japan will contribute to this framework
under the “Cool Earth Partnership” announced by Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda
in January this year at the World Economic Forum.
- The joint framework will include development of government capacity on the issue of climate change adaptation, review of poverty reduction strategies based on the assessment of economic implication of climate change, and training on climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. Japan hopes that this will help African countries overcome their vulnerability to climate change and promote their active engagement towards developing an effective post-2012 framework on climate change.
