Meeting between Mr. Osamu Uno, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary-General

In the afternoon of May 25 (Sun), Mr. Osamu Uno, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, during his visit to Myanmar, met with Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary-General.
Mr. Uno stated that he highly evaluated ASEAN’s efforts at the International Pledging Conference on Cyclone Nargis; it was important for the ASEAN and the UN to show their stance to support Myanmar.
In response, Dr. Surin stated that: after the Pledging Conference, he would launch a humanitarian task force consisting of a total of 24 members, from all the ASEAN member states and from the ASEAN Secretariat; the task force will play the role of linking Myanmar to the international community; the Pledging Conference is considered as a new beginning; he strongly believes that the conference was successful because of efforts made by those concerned even though the cyclone disaster was the first serious challenge in the history of the ASEAN.
