Japan-Laos Summit Meeting

On May 22, H.E. Mr. Yasuo Fukuda, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with visiting Lt. Gen. Choummaly Sayasone, President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, for about 40 minutes from 16:10. The outline of their meeting is as follows:
- Prime Minister Fukuda expressed a welcome to President Choummaly for
the first visit of Lao President to Japan and indicated his intention to
promote trade and investment with Laos, which is an important country for
the stability and development of the Mekong Region as a whole; he also said
that Japan would increase its assistance for the next two years.
- Prime Minister Fukuda told President Choummaly that after Prime Minister
Bouasone Bouphavanh visited Japan in May last year, the number of Japanese
companies visiting Laos has been increasing. President Choummaly expressed
his willingness to accept investment by Japanese companies, which plays
very important role in promoting the economic development of Laos.
- President Choummaly expressed deep appreciation for the high quality
of Japanese assistance, and that it is contributing greatly to the improvement
of infrastructure, development of human resources and improvement of the
quality of life. Prime Minister Fukuda said that, at a time when regional
economic integration is being promoted, he expected Laos to promote nation-building
with the ownership and achieve stable and sustainable economic growth, by
using Japanese assistance effectively.
- Prime Minister Fukuda expressed gratitude for Lao’s support for Japan’s
entry as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
- President Choummaly valued the Cool Earth Promotion Programme announced in January this year by Prime Minister Fukuda. Mr. Fukuda expressed his intention to promote the Cool Earth Partnership with Laos and support Lao’s effort for countermeasures against global warming. After the summit meeting, Joint Announcement on Enhanced Cooperation in Environment and Climate Change Issues between two countries was released.
