The Third Meeting of the Commission on Promotion of Public-Private Cooperation for TICAD and the Japan-Africa Exchange Year
April 11, 2008
- On April 11 (Fri), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held the third meeting
of the Commission on Promotion of Public-Private Cooperation for TICAD and
the Japan-Africa Exchange Year in Tokyo. The meeting was hosted by
Mr. Itsunori Onodera, Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs.
- The representatives of the Government and the private-sector gathered
together at the meeting, and the private sector submitted a recommendation
“Towards a New Development in Africa by Coordination between Public and
Private Sectors,” taking into account the TICAD IV (Fourth Tokyo International
Conference on African Development), to be held in Japan in May this year,
and it was adopted. The recommendation reflects such constructive
opinions as building a strategy for Africa under private and public-sector
cooperation, coordination between private-sector projects and ODA, including
use of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), assistance to improve the
investment environment in Africa, and the use of Japan’s experience and
know-how.
- It was concluded at the meeting that holding similar exchanges of information and discussions on a regular basis for five years in the future would be meaningful, taking opportunity of the year 2008, which happens to be the Japan-African Exchange Year and the year of TICAD IV. The participants also reaffirmed the importance of coordination between the public and private sectors and confirmed they would tackle development issues in Africa and Japan-Africa exchange while taking into account Japan’s national interests.
