Statement by Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the terrorist shooting attack in Jerusalem
March 7, 2008
- Japan strongly condemns the terrorist shooting attack which
occurred on March 6 in Jerusalem. Japan expresses its condolences to the bereaved
families as well as deepest sympathy for the people who were injured. Terrorism
cannot be justified for any reason, and any attempt to justify it is unacceptable.
- Japan deeply deplores the fact that such an incident occurred
while the efforts have been exerted by the parties concerned to realize the
peace in the Middle East. Japan also strongly urges all parties to exercise
their self-restraint, recognizing the necessity to prevent a cycle of violence.
- Japan has been deeply concerned over the escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip and the southern part of Israel as well as the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. Japan continues to call on both of the Israeli and the Palestinian sides to work tenaciously on the peace negotiations in order to achieve the peace. Japan will continue to support to the greatest extent possible, the efforts by all parties towards the advancement of the Middle East Peace Process.
