Statement by Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Election of the New President of the Council of State in Cuba

- On February 24 (Sun) (Japan time: 25), the National Assembly of People’s
Power of Cuba elected as President of the Council of State Mr. Raúl
Castro Ruz, First Vice-President of the Council of State, succeeding his
brother, former President Fidel Castro, who presided over this country for
nearly half a century.
- Japan has been endorsing the efforts of Latin American countries for democratization and hopes that this change in government will be a step forward toward the democratization in Cuba.
