Statement by Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Election of the New President of the Council of State in Cuba

  1. On February 24 (Sun) (Japan time: 25), the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba elected as President of the Council of State Mr. Raúl Castro Ruz, First Vice-President of the Council of State, succeeding his brother, former President Fidel Castro, who presided over this country for nearly half a century.
     
  2. Japan has been endorsing the efforts of Latin American countries for democratization and hopes that this change in government will be a step forward toward the democratization in Cuba.
