Dispatch of Election Observer Mission to Pakistan for General Election

- The Government of Japan decided to dispatch an election observer mission
to Pakistan from February 15 (Fri) to 21 (Thu) to support the fair implementation
of the general election, which is slated for February 18 (Mon). The
mission will be headed by Mr. Takao Kawakami, former Japanese ambassador
to Pakistan, and will consist of a dozen or more members who are officials
of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its overseas Embassies and Consulates
as well as outside experts.
- In addition to observing the casting and counting of votes, the mission
will exchange opinions and information with the Central Election Commission
of Pakistan and election observer missions from other countries.
- In response to the announcement by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf that the country will accept election observer missions from various countries, the Government of Japan has decided to dispatch the mission to support the consolidation of democracy in Pakistan.
