Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan on the situation following the presidential election in Kenya

- Japan welcomes that the negotiations between the ruling and opposition
parties have commenced in order to solve the political crisis in Kenya,
and highly commends the mediation efforts of Mr. Kofi Annan and his delegation
of African Union eminent persons panel who facilitated the negotiations.
- Japan condemns the violence which has brought about numerous deaths
and injuries, and calls for Kenyan political leaders to discuss measures
to cease violence as first priority in the negotiation.
- Japan continues to follow the situation closely, and support and cooperate with international efforts at mediation.
