Second Ministerial Meeting of Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP)

- On September 16 (Sun), the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Global
Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) will be held in Vienna. The Japanese
delegation headed by Mr. Yukiya Amano, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
to the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in
Vienna, and Dr. Shunsuke Kondo, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission
(AEC) of Japan, Cabinet Office, and other relevant officials from agencies
concerned, will participate in the meeting.
- The GNEP is a framework proposed on February 2006 by the United States
to deal with such issues as energy supply, environment, development, and
non-proliferation while expanding the supply of the atomic energy. The
first Ministerial-level meeting was held in Washington D.C. in May 2007
and was attended by representatives from China, France, Japan, Russia, and
the United States.
- In addition to the five states above, representatives from more than 20 countries will newly participate in this meeting. The GNEP’s ‘Statement of Principles’ will be signed, and the GNEP regime will be internationally established.
