Deposit of the Instrument of Acceptance of the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006

- On August 31 (Fri) (Japan time: September 1 (Sat)), the instrument of
acceptance of the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006 was deposited
by the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, to the Secretary-General
of the United Nations, at the headquarters of the U.N. in New York.
- This is the Successor Agreement to the current International Tropical
Timber Agreement, 1994 and aims to promote the international trade of legally
logged tropical timber and the sustainable management of tropical forests.
Through the entry into force of the new Agreement, it is expected
that international cooperation between producer and consumer countries of
tropical timber will be further enhanced.
- The conclusion of this Agreement was approved by the Japanese Diet on June 19, 2007, and the Cabinet decided its acceptance on August 31.
