Japan Filed Applications at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the Arrested Japanese Fishing Vessel (Release of the 88th Hoshinmaru and Return of the Master and Crew)
August 16, 2007
- On August 6, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) ordered the prompt release of the vessel on condition of payment of 10 million rubles (about 46 million yen) and the unconditional return of its master and the crew for the case in which Japan called for an early release of the 88th Hoshinmaru, the Japanese vessel that was arrested off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.
- By August 15, the owner of the 88th Hoshinmaru had completed the remittance of the bond of 10 million rubles to the bank account designated by the Russian side, and on August 16, the Russian side received the remittance.
- The Government of Russia therefore decided on the release of the vessel and personnel in accordance with the ITLOS judgment mentioned above. The 88th Hoshinmaru, together with its master and crew, left Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy Port at 18:40 (local time) on August 16 (Japan time: 14:40 on August 16) and headed for Hanasaki Port, Nemuro, Hokkaido. If the voyage goes smoothly, the vessel will arrive at Hanasaki Port in the afternoon of August 19.
