Visit to Japan by Dr. Ibrahim Gambari, Special Advisor to U.N. Secretary-General

- On July 13 (Fri), Mr. Masayoshi Hamada, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs,
had a meeting with Dr. Ibrahim Gambari, Special Advisor to U.N. Secretary-General
on Myanmar and the International Compact with Iraq and Other Issues, who
visited Japan on the same day.
- Regarding the situation in Myanmar, Mr. Hamada reiterated Japan’s support
for the efforts of the U.N. Secretary-General to implement his good offices
mission. Regarding the situation in Iraq, Mr. Hamada expressed his
expectations on the role of the United Nations in the reconstruction of
Iraq, such as the follow-up of the International Compact with Iraq.
- In response, Dr. Gambari said that Japan’s role vis-à-vis both Myanmar and Iraq was important, and he wished to continue close cooperation with Japan.
