Emergency Aid to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for Flood Disaster

July 6, 2007

  1. On July 6 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (sleeping pads, plastic sheets and portable jerry cans) equivalent to about 13 million yen for the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which sustained a flood disaster.
  2. In the southern part of Pakistan (Provinces of Sindh and Balochistan), a series of torrential rains and floods that were triggered by the passage of a cyclone on June 24 have left more than 250 persons dead --- 110 in Sindh Province, 132 in Balochistan Province and 28 in North-West Frontier Province --- 195 persons missing and more than 100,000 houses damaged or destroyed, forcing the afflicted people take shelter as evacuees.

At present, many of the victims in Pakistan are being forced to lead lives under severe conditions in shelters in wide-ranging areas.  The Government of Pakistan has therefore made rehabilitation efforts of its own and requested emergency assistance from the international community.
  3. The Government of Japan has decided upon this emergency aid from a humanitarian point of view for the afflicted people and in light of friendly relations with Pakistan.
