Meeting between Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Artis Pabriks, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia

From 19:30 to about 20:15 on June 7 at Iikura House, Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a foreign ministerial meeting with Dr. Artis Pabriks, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.
The gist of the meeting is as follows:
- Mr. Aso welcomed Dr. Pabriks’ visit to Japan, following his visit of last year. He mentioned the successful visit of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan to Latvia, and expressed his gratitude for its cooperation and hospitality.
- Dr. Pabriks expressed his hope to further strengthen the bilateral relationship with Japan, and said that he would like to have a foreign ministerial meeting among Japan and Baltic 3 countries. Mr. Aso said that it is important to enhance the relationship with the Baltic 3 countries based on the foreign policy of implementing the “Arc of Freedom and Prosperity.” Both sides decided, on the basis of the consent of Estonia and Lithuania, to hold a foreign ministerial meeting among four countries and will arrange the schedule of the meeting in the near future.
- Dr. Pabriks also said that Latvia would support candidature of Japan for the 2008 election for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. Mr. Aso expressed his appreciation for this support, and said that Japan had aimed at realizing the early reform of UN Security Council, and of gaining a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. Both Ministers agreed to continue advancing their cooperative relationship in the United Nations.
- Furthermore, the two Ministers exchanged views on the relationship with Russia, a neighbor of both Japan and Latvia, and on international affairs such as situation in North Korea and China.
