Initialling of the Japan-EC Customs Co-operation Agreement

- The initialling of the Japan-EC Customs Co-operation Agreement (“AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN AND THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY ON CO-OPERATION AND MUTUAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANCE IN CUSTOMS MATTERS”) took place on June 5 in Berlin between the officials of the Government of Japan and the European Commission.
- This Agreement is expected to enhance customs co-operation between Japan and European Community, including exchange of information, in order to achieve smoother customs clearance and effective control of smuggling.
- The negotiations of this Agreement were started in January 2005 and reached an agreement in substance in March 2006.
- Both sides will take necessary procedures as expeditiously as possible towards a formal conclusion of this Agreement.
