Assistance through the World Food Programme (WFP) for Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation in Georgia

April 4, 2007

  1. On March 30, the Government of Japan, in response to a request from the World Food Programme (WFP), decided to contribute US 100,000 dollars (about 11,100,000 yen) out of its funds to WFP for its Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation for Georgia, Transitional Assistance and Capacity Building.
  2. Because of the high unemployment rate, low agricultural productivity, frequent occurrence of natural disasters and other reasons, 53% of the Georgians live in poverty, and 38% of them do not receive an adequate calorie intake.  Refugees, orphans, aged persons, and patients including those suffering from tuberculosis and AIDS, are in need of WFP assistance.
  3. This Japanese assistance, mainly provided to 212,700 persons comprising those afflicted by conflicts in rural villages in Georgia, such vulnerable persons as refugees and HIV/AIDS victims, will be used for general food distribution for Chechen refugees, orphans, aged persons and tuberculosis/AIDS patients, school feeding and food-for-work programs.
