Emergency Grant Aid for Humanitarian Assistance to the Darfur Region, Sudan
June 22, 2006
- On June 22 (Thu), the Government of Japan decided to extend a grant aid totaling about $10 million (about 1,100 million yen) to contribute to improving the humanitarian situation in the Darfur region, Sudan: about $5 million to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), about $3.68 million to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and about $1.32 million for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
- This support was announced by Prime Minister Koizumi during his visit to Africa last May, and covers the following projects:
- (1) Construction and rehabilitation of water supply facilities and primary schools, and provision of textbooks and school supplies (UNICEF)
- (2) Assistance for protection, repatriation and reintegration of refugees and internally displaced persons (including those in Chad) (UNHCR)
- (3) Medical Assistance (ICRC)
- In April last year, Japan pledged $100 million of assistance for the near term to help the consolidation of peace in Sudan, and this support is part of this assistance. The total amount of assistance provided so far including this support will be about $99 million (about 11 billion yen), nearly full of the pledged amount.
- Japan hopes that peace will be promptly consolidated in Sudan and other parts of Africa, and intends to continue proactive support toward that goal.
