Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Pardons of Members of the Opposition Party in Cambodia
February 6, 2006
- Since the Cambodian National Assembly voted to lift temporarily the immunity from arrest of some members of the Sam Rainsy Party in February 2005, Japan has been concerned about the series of events surrounding opposition leader Mr. Sam Rainsy, who has been staying abroad, and opposition parliamentarian Mr. Cheam Channy, who has been in prison. Japan welcomes the news that the King of Cambodia has given pardons to these two opposition members and is glad that the problems surrounding them are moving toward a solution through peaceful talks among Cambodians.
- Japan hopes that Cambodia will develop in a form that respects human rights and democracy, and continues to watch the situation in Cambodia closely.
