Deposit of the Instrument of Acceptance of the "International Convention against Doping in Sport"

December 27, 2006

The Government of Japan deposited the instrument of acceptance of the "International Convention against Doping in Sport" with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris on December 26 (Tue) (Japan time: 27 (Wed)).

This convention stipulates that the States Parties will both domestically and internationally take appropriate measures which are consistent with the principles of the World Anti-Doping Code, encourage all forms of international cooperation aimed at protecting athletes, and ethics in sport, and at sharing the results of research, and foster international cooperation between States Parties and leading organizations in the fight against doping in sport, in particular with the World Anti-Doping Agencies (WADA).

As a WADA Foundation Board Member, the Government of Japan has been actively contributing to the prevention of doping. Japan's acceptance of the convention is significant from such viewpoints as this country's further efforts to prevent doping both internationally and domestically and to make an international appeal.

The convention will come into effect on February 1, 2007. The first session of the Conference of Parties will be held in Paris (at UNESCO headquarters) from February 5 (Sun) to 7 (Tue) next year.

As of December 26, 34 countries including Japan, Canada, the U.K. and China have concluded this convention.
