Decision on the Chairman of the Executive Committee, etc. of "The Japan-China Exchange Year of Culture and Sports 2007"

December 11, 2006

  1. The executive committee for "The Japan-China Exchange Year of Culture and Sports 2007" was recently established and its first meeting will be held on December 21 at the Keidanren Kaikan. On that day, Mr. Fujio Mitarai, Chairman & CEO of Canon Inc. (Chairman of the Nippon Keidanren - Japan Business Federation) will officially assume the chairmanship of the committee after approval by the action committee.
  2. The year 2007 will see the 35th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China. Taking this occasion, "The Japan-China Exchange Year of Culture and Sports" is intended to enhance mutual understanding through various exchanges. At the Japan-China summit talks that were held in October this year when Prime Minister Abe visited China, the two leaders agreed to actively develop national exchanges through holding "The Japan-China Exchange Year of Culture and Sports 2007."
  3. This Exchange Year aims to introduce an image of a new Japan and the Japanese to the Chinese people of the new generation. To achieve this goal, the Government of Japan, the private sector and local governments will, in concert, put emphasis on (1) youth exchange (participation of young people who lead the future of the next generation), (2) grass-roots exchange (projects jointly participated in by the two peoples), (3) cultural exchange (introducing Japan's contemporary culture in accordance with the needs), (4) sport exchange (supporting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games), (5) economic exchange (stabilization of existing markets and development of new markets), and (6) social action program (assistance to poor areas, environmental protection, etc.).
  4. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently established a page for "The Japan-China Exchange Year of Culture and Sports 2007" on its website, requesting visitors to provide information on projects to be carried out in 2007. It will put the information provided on the project calendar of "The Japan-China Exchange Year of Culture and Sports 2007" for further publication.
