Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Rapprochement of the Diplomatic Relation between Republic of Iraq and Syrian Arab Republic

- On 21st November, H. E. Mr. Walid Al-Muallem, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Syrian Arab Republic currently visiting Iraq, and H.E. Mr. Hoshyar Zebari, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Republic of Iraq, agreed on a document to normalize the diplomatic relation between two countries.
- In the Middle East region where there are many difficult challenges such as the situation in Iraq, the rapprochement of the diplomatic relation between Republic of Iraq and Syrian Republic is a positive first step forward. As far as the Government of Japan is concerned, we expect that this will contribute to stabilize the region including Iraq, and will look closely the situation in the region.
- So far, Japan has been actively and continuously supporting the reconstruction of Iraq by humanitarian assistance made by Japanese Self Defense Forces and ODA, from the view point that the stabilization of Iraq contributes to Japan's interest, and will continue to support the reconstruction of Iraq actively.
